I’m a huge fan of chocolate. I won’t go as far as saying that I am obsessed with chocolate but it certainly has a special place in my heart. I thought it would be fun to start out my first post in this category by sharing 7 ways that we can
indulge enjoy chocolate.
Types of Chocolate
First though, I wanted to talk about the types of chocolate: milk chocolate, dark chocolate and white chocolate. The different chocolate types are due to the varying quantities of cocoa and milk added. The National Confectioners Association provides more details on the differences among the chocolates here.
My least favourite kind of chocolate is white chocolate. I can handle it in small doses, particularly the cookies n cream flavour but it’s certainly not my go-to option.
Milk chocolate slots into 2nd place for me. I enjoy this and there are so many brands and flavours out there to sample. It’s a personal mission of mine to try all of the major brands that I can.
Dark Chocolate takes the coveted 1st spot in my life. It was more of an acquired taste for me as I started swapping out my milk chocolate for dark to help in my fitness goals. I quickly learnt that dark chocolate in moderate amounts has health benefits including decreased risk of heart disease and improved good cholesterol. I certainly see it as a way to have my cake and eat it too albeit a small slice of cake to help in my fitness pursuits.
Brands of Chocolate
There are several brands of chocolate available and I look forward to discussing more of these in the future on the blog. I’m still discovering brands and I’m certainly enjoying the journey. My current top 3 brands are:
1/ Ritter Sport
7 Ways to Enjoy Chocolate
Read on below for ways to enjoy chocolate and my personal experience on each:
1/ Chocolate Cake
I had the most amazing chocolate cake at my friend’s wedding in Cuba. It was totally worth the calories consumed, it was moist, chocolatey and yummy! I have great memories just re-living the moment- the initial shock at just how good the cake was, the measured chewing to stretch the flavour and taste as much as possible and then the sadness on realising I had eaten the last morsel. Brownies are another must-have for me especially when they include chocolate chips.
2/ Hot Chocolate
Hot chocolate in Italy is truly one of my personal favourites. It is much thicker than we normally have so you need to drink it with a spoon but it’s very rich and enjoyable. It’s helpful to keep a glass of water handy as you will need it after you enjoy this treat.
3/ Chocolate Milk
This made the list but it’s probably the one that I rarely have as I don’t drink many cold beverages. However, it’s chocolate so it certainly deserves its place.
4/ Chocolate Bars/Truffles
My most common form of getting my chocolate fix. I love grabbing a bar from the fridge and snapping off a few pieces to eat. I don’t like fruits in my chocolate but I’d eat almost all other types and I’m open to trying new flavours. If I’m actively pursuing a fitness goal/spiritual discipline, I can go without it for quite a while but eventually I always come back as it’s just that good!
5/ Chocolate Ice Cream
I live in a tropical climate so I have ice cream pretty regularly outdoors and I enjoy all the chocolate combinations. We have local homemade ice cream that’s excellent here. I always try to have ice cream overseas when I travel as well and I’ve fallen in love with Ben & Jerry’s and Haagen Dazs as well as any ice cream I can find in Italy.
6/ Chocolate Fondue
When I saw my first chocolate fountain, I was enamoured with the beautiful chocolate flowing down from layer to layer. I was even more excited to try it and I had a variety of chocolate dipped foods from marshmallows to strawberries and pineapples and even more. A chocolate fountain has a certain pull that’s tough to resist for chocolate-lovers like me even if it’s just to watch the chocolate flowing down.
7/ Chocolate Biscuits/Cookies
Throw in chocolate chips and this transforms already good chocolate biscuits to crunchy chocolatey culinary delights. They can be great for dipping in hot chocolate or tea for extra oomph! I’m making myself salivate just thinking about it.
It will be fun to go on this chocolate journey. I hope you join me to see where it leads.
